Thunderous Applause vs. Thunderous Jets

The floated and rejected idea of a Major League Baseball game in Grand Teton Nation Park was probably a stretch logistically, but it could have been fun and beautiful – weather permitting. I’m annoyed that our community gets all worked up about some things – like the ball game and big hotels downtown, but not a peep about 1,900 units of permanent, open space destroying, suburban sprawl on iconic agricultural land in Northern South Park, or the huge clear-cut scar on Snow King for a ski run that nobody uses, or how about the untouchable “elephant in the Park” that we aren’t supposed to see, the incredibly busy and deafeningly loud airport that squats in the midst GTNP destroying the quiet tranquillity that should be a signature characteristic of this national treasure. It seems like the performative outrage over a one-off Major League Baseball spectacle is just a virtue signalling distraction to “hide the ball” on the really important issues of over-development that our valley faces. Arbitrary, self-congratulatory, selective righteousness that allows us to feel good about ourselves while we turn a blind eye to the relentless, grinding destruction of Jackson Hole’s wildlands and open spaces.
